The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.appia.pt\/2015\/07\/29\/anuncio-do-resultado-final-do-premio-melhor-tese-de-doutoramento-em-inteligencia-artificial-2013-2014\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announcement<\/a> was made today at APPIA web site (in Portuguese).<\/p>\n<p>Promoted by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.appia.pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">APPIA<\/a>, the award received a total of 10 applications and upon receipt thereof, the jury was formed, consisting of (alphabetically):<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Luis Antunes (University of Lisbon);<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Luis Seabra Lopes (University of Aveiro);<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Paulo Quaresma (University of \u00c9vora);<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Pedro Henriques (University of Minho) and<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Rui Camacho (University of Porto).<\/p>\n<p>The Prize of the Portuguese Association for Artificial Intelligence for the Best Doctoral Thesis in Artificial Intelligence 2013-2014 was attributed to Antonio Jesus Monteiro de Castro, under the theme &#8220;A Distributed Approach to Integrated and Dynamic Disruption Management in Airline Operations Control&#8221;. It was considered that &#8220;<em>this thesis demonstrates in an exemplary manner the relevance of the use of Artificial Intelligence techniques to solve complex problems<\/em>&#8220;, with a &#8220;<em>very relevant application impact<\/em>&#8221; and that &#8220;<em>led to the creation of a spin-off.<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It was also decided to award an honorable mention to Hugo Gon\u00e7alo Oliveira, under the theme &#8220;Onto.PT: Towards the Automatic Construction of a Lexical Ontology for\u00a0Portuguese.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The prize and honorable mention will be officially handed over to the winning candidates (or their representatives) during the conference dinner at the <a href=\"http:\/\/epia2015.dei.uc.pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">17th Portuguese Conference on Artificial Intelligence (EPIA 2015)<\/a>, on 10 September 2015 in Coimbra, Portugal.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The PhD thesis behind the MASDIMA technology won the Best Artificial Intelligence PhD Thesis 2013-2014 Award from the Portuguese Association for Artificial Intelligence (APPIA).
