Best Artificial Intelligence PhD Thesis Award

The PhD thesis behind the MASDIMA technology won the Best Artificial Intelligence PhD Thesis 2013-2014 Award from the Portuguese Association for Artificial Intelligence (APPIA). The announcement was made today at APPIA web site (in Portuguese).

Promoted by APPIA, the award received a total of 10 applications and upon receipt thereof, the jury was formed, consisting of (alphabetically):

– Luis Antunes (University of Lisbon);

– Luis Seabra Lopes (University of Aveiro);

– Paulo Quaresma (University of Évora);

– Pedro Henriques (University of Minho) and

– Rui Camacho (University of Porto).

The Prize of the Portuguese Association for Artificial Intelligence for the Best Doctoral Thesis in Artificial Intelligence 2013-2014 was attributed to Antonio Jesus Monteiro de Castro, under the theme “A Distributed Approach to Integrated and Dynamic Disruption Management in Airline Operations Control”. It was considered that “this thesis demonstrates in an exemplary manner the relevance of the use of Artificial Intelligence techniques to solve complex problems“, with a “very relevant application impact” and that “led to the creation of a spin-off.

It was also decided to award an honorable mention to Hugo Gonçalo Oliveira, under the theme “Onto.PT: Towards the Automatic Construction of a Lexical Ontology for Portuguese.”

The prize and honorable mention will be officially handed over to the winning candidates (or their representatives) during the conference dinner at the 17th Portuguese Conference on Artificial Intelligence (EPIA 2015), on 10 September 2015 in Coimbra, Portugal.
