In a story with title “CORONAVIRUS: AIRLINES PREPARING FOR FUTURE WITH FEWER PASSENGERS AND HIGHER FARES” by Simon Calder from Independent, two new concepts have entered the aviation vocabulary: “de-densification” and “neutralisation”.
The first describes reducing passenger numbers in an attempt to maintain social distancing within the cramped confines of a passenger jet; the second is the process of specifying seats that must remain unoccupied. According to Mr De Juniac: “De-densification, if it is requested by the civil aviation and the health authority, will be by neutralising one seat in each row among the two rows of seats of short-haul aircraft.”
For example, on an aircraft holding 189 passengers, with the middle seats unoccupied, only 126 would be allowed on board. AI algorithms are perfect for this kind of task, .i.e, distribute passenger allocation inside the aircraft according to rules, preferences and goals. It is not rocket science.
